Well whatever works for your system, use it. Myself I take a bit of this and that while adding common sense. Most items would be sold from those that could hang on to their goods. Everyone is looking for the "Big Easy" and retire comfortably. Usually if someone is looking for an item I just have a "peddler" or someone that is selling that item, then packs up and travels onward. As for the price... what are you willing to pay is your answer.
Remember: if you find something and it's not yours, it was mine and I'll only take a small but yet nominal fee to let you kepp my jun-- er-- um.. goods.
